Building Bridges, Breaking Stigma
How old do you have to be to suffer a stroke?
Of the 3500 babies born every year with sickle cell disease, 100 will suffer a stroke before their ninth birthday. Help us to help them.

Sickle Cell & Young Stroke Survivors (SCYSS) is a registered charity, that holistically supports children, young people and their families affected by sickle cell anaemia and childhood stroke. It started as a support group in June 2005 by a parent who had to manouvre the lonely Stroke maze when her 6 year old had a stroke as a result of Sickle Cell Anaemia. As the need grew, in September 2007, it became a registered charity.
Many people do not know that Sickle Cell can cause a stroke in children as young as 2 and up to the age of 16 years old. The statistics are alarming, yet ignorance is still bliss.

David Adetipe is 18 years old. This is his view on this first time in a theatre. “It was such a great opportunity for me to have agreed to go out with the SCYSS club members. Personally I have always preferred to stay back home and just read some novels or catch up with my school work. It’s not because I don’t want to go out but because of my condition, I have not been too keen about socialising with people.” |
